Hornby R388 BR Class 86 pantograph locomotive Frank Hornby
This highly collectable model is the extremely hard to get hold of Hornby Railways R388 model of the British Rail Intercity Class 86 electric pantograph locomotive ‘Frank Hornby’. This Limited Edition model is in mint factory fresh condition and has been shelf stored since new. Apart from a short test run, it has never seen or been on a layout. This rarely available Bo-Bo locomotive is finished in two-tone BR Intercity grey livery and with the correct, yellow warning panel ends and grey roof, it is absolutely stunning. The nameplate features silver writing of the locomotive name on a scarlet background and the BR logo is the small type. Only available for a one-year period between 1988 and 1989, this item was constructed in the modern manner. This locomotive, numbered 86414, is just as good as the day it was first made and it would be impossible to obtain a better condition item. We removed the model from the box for the digital scan and the model has all detailing exactly as it should be. Glass windows, fully detailed cab interior and the completely intact orange electrical insulators are just 3 of the instantly recognizable features of the model. The locomotive is just a beautifully made evocative item. Unlike the latest Hornby models which feature an inoperative pantograph, this model has the working pantograph that allows the loco to be powered from the track, or the overhead catenary system, by a selector switch on the roof of the locomotive. This allows 2 separately controlled trains to simultaneously run over the same length of track so giving a far more interesting and realistic train operation. Just 1750 of this Limited Edition model were ever made for worldwide distribution so this is the first one of these that we have had available for quite some time. The original box is in a bright, unfaded, sharp and intact condition with some storage scuff marks. The right hand box end flap has the original yellow label with the correct model number and description and the flap is still factory sealed. Inside the box, the locomotive is protected in a white moulded polystyrene surround. The original factory protective display card remains with the item and there are no instructions.
This item predates digital control but should be an easy conversion to be DCC ready with the correct Hornby chip.
As all of our items are collectables and may have been stored for a long time, we would recommend that if the model is to be run, a light lubrication and dust removal would be appropriate ( where applicable ).
